6 Red Flags to Watch Out For When Hiring a Security Installer in Ghana

The security installation industry in Ghana is unfortunately not well regulated. This means that alongside reputable companies, there are many unqualified operators who cut corners, use substandard equipment, and disappear after payment. Here’s how to protect yourself.

🚩 Red Flag 1: No Portfolio or Verifiable Past Work

Any serious security installer should be able to show you photos and videos of past installations. Ask to see their work — and if possible, check whether clients can be contacted for references. A company with nothing to show has likely done very little.

🚩 Red Flag 2: Prices That Seem Too Good to Be True

Extremely low prices usually mean one thing: cheap, unbranded equipment that will fail within months. Quality CCTV cameras, electric fence energizers and gate motors have a standard cost. If someone quotes you far below market rate, ask why — and be very sceptical of the answer.

🚩 Red Flag 3: No Written Quote or Agreement

Always insist on a written quote detailing what equipment will be installed, where cameras will be positioned, and what the total cost includes. Verbal agreements leave you with no recourse if the job is done badly or the spec changes.

🚩 Red Flag 4: No After-Sales Support

Security systems need maintenance and occasional repairs. A company that won’t commit to after-sales support — or that becomes unreachable after installation — is not worth hiring. Ask specifically: what happens if something stops working in 3 months?

🚩 Red Flag 5: Unknown or Unbranded Equipment

Reputable installers use recognised brands — Hikvision, Dahua, V380, Nemtek and similar. If someone can’t name the brand of equipment they’re using, or uses generic no-name cameras, avoid them. Branded equipment comes with manufacturer support and spare parts availability.

🚩 Red Flag 6: Pressure to Pay Upfront in Full

While a deposit is standard, a company that demands full payment before starting any work — or pressures you to pay quickly — is a warning sign. Pay a deposit to secure the job, and only pay the balance once you’re satisfied with the installation.
